What is Asclera?

Asclera is a sclerosing agent engineered to collapse the inner lining (endothelium) of the blood vessels that make up unsightly veins in the lower extremities. It is injected during a sclerotherapy session and can reduce the appearance of spider veins and small varicose veins up to an eighth of an inch. Each treatment typically involves multiple injections and takes 15-45 minutes to perform.

What causes spider and varicose veins?

Veins that appear in the legs and other regions of the body can cause self-consciousness for many patients. Some may even feel too embarrassed to wear shorts or swimwear. Common causes of unsightly veins include:

  • Genetics
  • Obesity
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Trauma
  • Aging
  • Standing long hours

How does Asclera work?

Once injected, Asclera gets to work on the inner lining of the blood vessels. It causes platelets and cellular waste to affix to the blood vessel walls, which leads to clotting. With time, the clotted vein will gradually fade and be replaced with healthy tissue. By blocking the blood’s path to bulging veins, new transport channels are created, redirecting the blood to veins with functioning valves so that it can return to the heart.

What are the benefits of Asclera?

Asclera injections are a convenient, effective, and rapid way to rid the body of unwanted veins for good. The treatment can ease both the cosmetic and functional problems associated with spider and varicose veins. Benefits include:

  • Eradicates unsightly veins
  • Eliminates vein-related discomfort
  • Patients can see results right away
  • Long-lasting cosmetic and functional improvement
  • Minimally invasive procedure with no downtime

Am I a good candidate for Asclera in Omaha?

Patients struggling with spider veins or small varicose (reticular) veins are typically excellent candidates for Asclera injections. However, individuals who are allergic to polidocanol, the active ingredient in Asclera, should not undergo the procedure. Asclera is also not appropriate for patients struggling with vein and blood clotting disorders. Our skilled, experienced team will evaluate your candidacy for Asclera during a private, confidential consultation at our state-of-the-art office suites.

What can I expect from the treatment process?

Before the procedure

Prior to your injections, our team will assess your medical history and perform a physical evaluation to ensure Asclera is right for your goals. Patients with larger varicose veins or more complex spider veins may be advised to select a different treatment modality.

During the procedure

Our precision-oriented injectors will administer Asclera into the targeted areas, causing the unwanted veins to collapse over the course of several weeks and become less prominent. Once the blood vessels have been broken down, the body will gradually absorb the veins, redirecting blood to other pathways.

What happens after Asclera?

One of the reasons patients love Asclera is that the treatment comes with no downtime. You will be instructed to wear a compression stocking after your session for several days and to walk 15-20 minutes immediately after your Asclera injections. You must continue to take walks once a day for the first week after Asclera. However, you should refrain from high-impact aerobics, strenuous exercise, and excessive sun exposure for 7 days. Our team will follow up with you to ensure your healing process goes smoothly and you are enjoying the benefits of your treatment.

FAQ

What kind of veins can be addressed with Asclera?

While Asclera will not work on larger varicose veins, it can treat reticular veins up to an eighth of an inch in size. Small spider veins will also respond well to Asclera.

Is Asclera painful?

There may be minor stinging or discomfort when Asclera is first injected, but it’s over almost immediately. Some patients may not even notice the injections. Asclera contains a skin-numbing agent, ensuring your treatment is stress-free.

How many sessions with Asclera will I need?

In general, patients may need to undergo 2-4 treatments in order to obtain their desired results. Speak with your provider during your private consultation to determine your individual treatment plan.
